Dance Workshops
Last autumn a Leeds based Dance Company "Ascendance Rep" were touring 10 Yorkshire churches and were working with over 300 children from 10 community and school groups. "Inner Spaces" is Ascendance Rep's largest and most exciting education project to date and follows the successful CHAPS gallery and theatre tour.
CLiKS are continuously looking for news ways to inspire children and once CLiKS heard about the Inner Spaces event we just had to get a school in Keighley involved! The school which we chose to ask was Riddlesden St Mary's Primary School.
We decided to aim the workshops at the Year 5 class. Everybody took part in creative dance workshops led by the company's education team, who explored the church’s architecture and cultural heritage. At the end of a full week's dancing they created a short dance piece to be performed to the local community in the Keighley Shared Church.
It was a brilliant week, and all of the children thoroughly enjoyed it. I felt it really gave the children a time to get to know each other as a class, and how to work together. They also learnt many creative ways to move. It was great to see the children coming up with different creative ideas in the shapes of things they could see in and around the church, for example a stained glass window or a pillar.
CLiKS will definitely be looking for ways in the future that involve creative movement and dance. Not necessarily on this bigger scale, but in ways which would interest more schools.
